Our company controller is sort of paranoid about hooking up IBM clone type
PC's to the IBM AS/400. He says he wants to be able to make IBM take all the
heat for any connectivity problems. Therefore he wants to spend some serious
bucks on IBM metal:
PS/2 Model 50SX-061 --- 2 each.
8512 Monitor --- 2 each.
IBM 5 1/4"
external drive and adapter:
--- 2 each.
IBM DOS 4.01 --- 2 each.
5250
Convenience kit/A with software:
--- 2 each.
I think he could pick up a couple of nice 386SX clones with the same
configuration (2Mbyte RAM, 3.5" and 5.25" drives, SVGA cards and monitors) for
1/2 to 2/3 the cost. Then he could install a 5250 emulator with an AT type bus
to connect up to the AS/400. He doesn't believe it.
Have any of you encountered problems doing this? Will PC Support run correctly
on a clone or does it HAVE to be IBM?
Thanks for your feedback. Also, are there better software programs for file
xfer, etc. than PC Support?

At my customer we justed tested the clones. Some worked and some didn't. I
misrember brand names and the type of BIOS is probably more important than the
brand name.
FYI, for the AS/400 you can save several hundred dollars by not buying the
convenience kit. The assumption is that you will use PC Support of course
which I see later on you're not too enthused about. Instead buy just the
twinax card and the T-connecter. IBM or your business partner will probably
have to do a bit of searching for the correct part numbers but insist on it. I
don't have them handy otherwise I'd give them to you.
My former employer's sales personnel are stilling selling the convenience kit
even though I explained the process and dug out the part numbers a year ago!
Why? They can make more money as they get paid five percent commission on the
gross sales. Only one of many reasons why I left to go on my own.

Jeff, Don't worry so much. Just buy clones & have IBM send you the 5250 card &
connection cable (approx $700). Clones that I have personally tested & do work
where Compuadd 286-16,Compuadd 386-20,Dell 386-20,CSS-Labs, CSS Labs 386-16
,CSS-Labs 386-20, Compaq Deskpros, AMI 386-20, AMI 386-25, AMI 386-25. Some
rules of thumb for purchase are (1) make sure the bus speed on the clone is
the standard ISA 8Mhz !! (2) The BIOS should be from a well known source AMI,
Award, Phoniex, Compaq. (3) Buy only IBM 5250 boards if you want to point
fingers at IBM. FYI, you can buy an AMI 386-33 Mhz with 8 Meg for what you'll
spend on the 50SX's???? And after all this & your bean counter, oops I mean
controller still doesn't believe it, have him give me a call, we've go 70
assorted Pc's (see above) connect to AS/400 & S/38. One last thing, buy one
machine & test it before you buy 100. 1-505-748-1471 - rc

If you don't need to use PC Support, clones will work fine. My customer is
using several different kinds of clones ( Everex, AST and some others) with
the Emerald Tech. emulation cards. No problems at all. The old IBM 5250 VER 1
emulation cards had to be thrown out and so did some of the older AST
emulation cards, but we kept all of the old IBM PCs and clones.
